Imagine a Northern Italian Hill Town Travel Photo Experience from Heritage Environments and Natural Landscapes to People and their Activities

This is an exclusive holiday photo workshop for up to 5 attendees.

Photographer Rick Hulbert will provide the educational content with Photographer Gerald King (who supplied the images here) guiding us to awesome sights and vantage points each day!

Imagine a full week photographic experience based in Triora, Italy … a quintessential Italian Hill Town surrounded by glorious picturesque scenes. Mid-October, 2017 was selected as the best time to try to capture fall colors.

Triora is a picturesque village in a lovely setting at the base of the Italian Alps of north-west Italy. The town is officially classified among the most beautiful Italian villages and is an elite member of I Borghi Piú Belli d'Italia, a list of the top 100 most beautiful medieval citadels in Italy. It is also a member of Touring Club Italia Bandiere Arancioni, a similarly prestigious club which lists the best places for tourists to enjoy. Although just thirty kilometers from the coast, it is in another world; near the top of the bright and sunny Argentine valley, and surrounded on all sides by richly varied mountain scenery - a paradise for photographers, walkers, mountain bikers, lovers of nature and those who just want to 'stand and stare’ . . . and capture great images!

Discover this gem of a town, and be prepared to take some of the best photographs you’ve ever taken. No tourist traps, no trite monuments, no crowds. Just the Italian Alps and your camera. Now that’s a photographer’s dream.

Why Triora?

If you are looking for a completely original, unique photography experience, then this is for you. Triora is a photographer’s delight. In every direction, the Italian Alps rise around you, and in every direction other delightful tiny towns cling to their own mountains. With architecture that is hundreds of years old, the interior of the town is off limits to cars. Small, covered, cobblestoned lanes wind their way between the residents’ houses, their stoops colorful with pots of flowers and herbs. Perhaps you might meet Signorina Antonella, the town’s white witch, or Signor Antonio who goes out into the woods each day in the fall to collect porcini mushrooms for his little produce shop. Daniella at Bar Riccici will greet you with a smile and bring you your morning coffee in the town square, meeting place for residents and expats alike. From every vantage point, the mountains, valleys, and hillsides beckon.

Where will we be staying?

You will be staying in a beautifully renovated, privately-owned 17th century convent, completely modernized but retaining its ancient charm. Imagine sitting out on the patio, sipping Prosecco as you watch the swallows darting overhead as the sun slips behind the mountains and the mist rolls in. At night, as you lie between the crisp sheets of your bed, wondering what sights the next day will bring, the only sounds you hear are the night birds, and the wind in the trees.

All your meals are included in this trip, with several visits to L’Herbe Gatta, the town’s main restaurant which serves locally grown and raised food, cooked to perfection. In the mornings, fresh coffee and pastries provided by Bar Riccici, and an in-house laid-on lunch will give you the necessary energy for hiking the surrounding hills. At least two home-cooked dinners at the Convento can be anticipated, as well as two lovely lunches when you are off on your field trips to neighbouring towns in Italy and France.

Will we be photographing other sights in addition to Triora?

In addition to photographing the architecture and surrounding Landscape of Triora, a day trip to Notre Dame des Fontaines in France, and one to Baiardo and Dolce Acqua in Italy have been planned, as well as a possible trip to the elegant vacation town of San Remo, whose late-19th century Belle Epoque architecture nestled against the Mediterranean Sea will give you ample opportunity to practice architectural, landscape, and people photography.
