This workshop is designed to help you take your photography from good to great by focusing on the art and science of composition. Rick Hulbert draws inspiration for this class from selected academic sciences including physics, mathematics, neurobiology and neuro-aesthetics.
As a group, you will also draw inspiration from selected academic arts including painting, cinematography, and architecture. Rick guarantees that you will come away with a better understanding of composition that goes far beyond “artistic feelings” and “divine proportions.”
If you are a “left brain” thinker, this workshop will appeal to your logical mind. You will discover how an approach to composition that is based both on the history of art and a contemporary understanding of how our brains see and perceive the world around us can lead us to create great photographic images.
If you are a “right brain” thinker this workshop will embrace your desire to break rules and express yourself. You will discover how even a cursory understanding of neuroscience can justify and refine some of the traditional artistic notions you hold. You will learn how the future beholders of your efforts actually evaluate images.
In photography, there are lots of rules that we tend to follow. In this workshop however, the only thing we will say about the “Rule of Thirds” is that it is unfounded, misleading, and dangerous . . . other than that, this rule is OK. ☺
If you have graduated from any of the Nikonians Academy workshops on Mastering Your Camera or are an accomplished photographer in your own right, then this workshop will do wonders for improving your photography.
This two-day workshop includes:
- Lectures
- Discussions
- Hands on photography in the field
- Selected image evaluations
Whether photography is your hobby, you are a passionate enthusiast, a professional, or even a fine art photographer, this workshop will help you get a grasp on your composition.
Equipment
There is no requirement for fancy equipment at this workshop. Ideally, you’ll have a dSLR or camera that allows you to vary the exposure, but any and every brand of camera will work. We strongly encourage participants with Nikon, Canon, Fuji, Olympus, Pentax, Sony, Leica, and any other camera brands to attend. The principles taught will also apply to point and shoot cameras, mirrorless cameras and even camera phones.
